I welcome you all to this two-day training program taking place here in Owerri, Imo state.
As you all know, this is the second Batch of training for Monitoring officers on grade level 12 – 14. The first part held last week in Ibadan, Oyo state.
I want to thank you Monitoring Officers for the work that you do. The critical job of serving as watchdog for the industry.
As a developing country, we encounter a lot of challenges. It is one of the Cardinal Objectives of broadcasting to assist in the development of the country and not gloss over these challenges. And it is our duty as regulators to guide the process.
When the BBC started in the 1920s, the perspective of the first Director General, John Reith, in the context of the world in the 1920s, was that, BBC was to galvanize the British people in a manner that will reinforce their belief in their country. I think in the context of the 21st century, with all the challenges that face us as a nation, broadcasting should help us to also galvanize our exceptional patriotism towards solving the challenges that face us as we try to build our country. This is the central message to our Licensees.
As Monitoring Officers, you are doing a lot of work for Nigeria. You are assisting us to see the Currents in the country. You are assisting us to look at the relationship between broadcasting and national development, between broadcasting and national security. The job of Monitoring is very central to the making of the country, that is why every single aspect of the work we do is very important in national development.
The knowledge you acquire from this training is very important, that is why I am glad we are able to bring people together, people who appreciate some those different things I spoke about to train you. Let us engage ourselves in a manner that will increase our knowledge and deepen our appreciation for our work as Monitoring officers. Also let us use this opportunity to address the challenges we face, on a daily basis as we do our work.
Once again I welcome you to this training program and wish you a fruitful two days in the city of Owerri.
Thank you.
