One of the interesting developments of the Jonathan Goodluck “Acting president” interregnum has been the hypocrisy at its heart: Goodluck pretends he is not interested in the position, but he is the one engineering developments. The Yoruba say there is a hidden actor behind a talkative deity and so it is with all manners of engineered manifestations around making Jonathan Goodluck the substantive president. A visitor from outer space should be forgiven if he asked if it was no longer the same government that is in power. Goodluck, who people argued did not have power as vice president, was busy awarding contracts; he deployed troops in Jos and as “acting president”, has set up the PAC, headed by General T. Y. Danjuma and I think that was fair enough.
But what about the controversial Presidential Projects Assessment Committee, headed by Ibrahim Bunu. Soon as it was set up, the media was flooded with stories that it was to probe Ministry of Agriculture; the NNPC; MDG office as well as NAPEP. There has been no denial. It is looking like Abba Sayyadi Ruma is actually the target, even if other bodies were brought in as decoy. Why have I said this? Ruma is the archetypal Yar adua man: he has stepped on toes; carried himself with arrogance and is supremely loyal to his principal, Yar adua. In the “new setting” of Jonathan Goodluck, such a man will be an easy target. Besides, why this new body when there are so many projects evaluation bodies in the system? There are the BPP’s committees in the six geo-political zones, headed by professionals; the office of Special Adviser to the matter of projects assessment, or what is really happening? Goodluck Jonathan has a maximum of 15 months at the helms and he should focus on doing a job for the Nigerian people, not attempting to drive the presidential car on flat tyres; he cannot get far that way!
