Fuel Subsidy Funds: Nigeria’s ‘Penkele Messi’

All Nigerians have known for a long while that the fuel subsidy funds were slush funds: used to oil the wheels of fortune for a few people tied directly to the ruling elite. The trails can easily be followed and they lead to the most haloed sanctuaries in Nigeria. Farouk Lawan told the House that in 2008, only about 26 companies took part in the subsidy regime; by 2011, they reached 140! The late Ibadan politician, Alhaji Adegoke Adelabu would have described the entire episode a “peculiar mess” and his followers would echo:”Penkele Messi”!
