Dr. Is’haq Modibbo Kawu, former Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), has emphasized the need for media integrity and unity among journalists. Kawu made the call while hosting a thought-provoking discussion with the members of Association of Kwara Online Media Practitioners (ASKOMP) in Ilorin on Monday.

He criticized media houses for giving awards to politicians, describing it as a joke that undermines journalism’s integrity. He recalled his time as Editor at Daily Trust Newspaper, where he never proposed such an idea, as it compromises media credibility. Instead, the media guru noted that Daily Trust recognized professionals making a positive impact, such as a doctor in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, who helped raped women.

He reiterated the importance of promoting ethical journalism and protecting freedom of expression, particularly in the digital space. Kawu further delved on the need for continuous training and capacity building for journalists, stressing that professional development is essential for maintaining credibility and adapting to the evolving media landscape. He opposed regulating social media, citing contradictions with the Nigerian Constitution. In his remarks, ASKOMP Chairman and Informant247 Founder/Publisher, Salihu Shola Taofeeq, appreciated Dr. Kawu’s dedication to journalism and prayed for his continued strength.
