Yesterday, March 3rd, 2025, former Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Dr. Is’haq Modibbo Kawu, hosted members of the Association of Kwara Online Media Practitioners (ASKOMP) for Iftar at his residence in Ilorin.
During the interactive session, Dr. Kawu urged young media practitioners to uphold the integrity of journalism by prioritizing ethical reporting, objectivity, and fairness. He criticized the growing trend of media houses conferring awards on politicians without merit, stating that such practices diminish public trust and compromise the profession’s credibility. He emphasized that recognition should be reserved for individuals who have made meaningful contributions to society, citing the example of a doctor in the Democratic Republic of Congo who provides medical support to victims of sexual violence.
Highlighting the need for continuous training and capacity building, Dr. Kawu advised journalists to stay updated with the evolving media landscape to maintain professionalism. He also addressed the issue of misinformation and media bias, urging media outlets to remain neutral and avoid aligning with political interests. Using international examples such as Fox News, BBC, and CNN, he illustrated how media organizations are often perceived based on their political inclinations and warned against such partisanship.
Responding to a question from an ASKOMP member on whether individuals or the government should counter claims that label real publications as fake simply because they are critical, Dr. Kawu noted that responses should be measured. He advised that if the accuser is someone of significance, a rejoinder should be written to clarify the facts. However, if it is just a random individual, it is best to ignore them, as engaging in unnecessary debates could become a distraction from more important work.
The engagement provided a platform for discussions on the challenges confronting journalism and strategies to safeguard its integrity. In his remarks, ASKOMP Chairman, Salihu Shola Taofeeq, commended Dr. Kawu for his dedication to the media industry and his unwavering support for journalists. He noted that Dr. Kawu’s insights reflect his vast experience in the industry and serve as a guide for upcoming media practitioners striving to maintain professionalism in a rapidly changing landscape.
